Personal Narrative

My buddy, Sgt Osgood, was with us in Iraq back in 2004. After we returned to CONUS he transferred out of HMLA-367 and moved over to Yuma SAR. He went from search and destroy to search and rescue, I loved to bust his ***** on that one.

During a training flight in Aug 2007, on the Yuma Proving Grounds, his Huey went down in a cavern and 4 out of 5 crew members were killed. Sgt Osgood and the co-pilot Capt Walters (also HMLA-367) were both guys I looked up to as I came up through the ranks in “Scarface”. Both these guys loved chopperin’ around and hearing that familiar wop-wop. I believe that whole crew deserves to be here with the rest of us. Sgt Osgood was a true crewchief, an awesome doorgunner, and a hell of a Marine.

Personal Narrative

The names of the 4 dead are: 35-year-old Maj. Cesar Y. Freitas, a pilot from Boulder, Colo.; 33-year-old Capt. Bradley E. Walters, a pilot from Arlington, Texas and formerly with HMLA-367; 27-year-old Sgt. Charles L. Osgood, a crew chief from Phoenix also formerly with HMLA-367; and 25-year-old Petty Officer 2nd Class Brendon O. Sandburg, a Navy corpsman from Stuart, Fla.

LCpl Brian D. Stahlhut was the sole survivor of the accident. All five crew members were with Search and Rescue (SAR) attached to Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron at MCAS Yuma The Huey was equipped for search and rescue (SAR) operations, and the crew was conducting a routine training flight near the US Army Yuma Proving Ground when the accident occurred on 16 Aug 2007. I don’t have a BuNo.

Sgt Doerr,
Thank you for your coments about Charlie. He spoke of you often and you were part of the Team Huey picture they used at the memorial service. Pecknold gave a wonderful speech in Yuma, of Charlie while he was with you all. He is missed daily, with so many people he touched in life - your note made my day a little brighter. Thank you.
