"Later in the day at 201540H sixteen UH-34D's of HMM-261 and HMM-363 escorted by four armed UH-1E's lifted one company (-) of 3rd Bn., 7th Marines from RS432867 into an unsecure LZ at BS 471861 in three waves. Intense small arms fire was encountered. Two of the first four aircraft into the zone were hit. The gunner of the lead aircraft received a fatal wound while the aircraft was lifting from the pick up zone."
