Personal Narrative
Benny Hack was a gunner and was hit in the head by a .50 cal on his first flight, he was the only one hit in the huey. Maj. R.D. Purcell was the pilot, I don't know who the rest of the aircrew was.
Submitted by: Ed Alexander, VMO-6, 20030802I am a friend of Bennys late sister, Sharon Hack Moore. I never knew Benny Glen Hack, but I want his sacrifice to be remembered. The co-pilot of the helicopter was Major Elbert R. Touchton. As you can see, in the post above, Sharon sought closure. Either Major Touchton or Major Purcell eventually reached out to Sharon. Whomever did this, it gave her peace of mind. Sharon passed away in 2016 and her husband passed away a few months later. They had no children. When the family cleaned out the house, I wound up with a number of papers (telegrams, letters, etc.) related to his service, to include his certificate for The Purple Heart. Is there any archive for such memorabilia? Id really like to see the materials safely archived.
