A view of Lake Miramar from Roger Herman's condo just to the east of MCAS Miramar. The condo served as "crew quarters" for Ron Luks and Wayne Stafford during the airshow 09.jpg

Ben Cascio strikes an "OOORAH pose" in front of the Marines' recruiting set-up at the airshow. It worked, as the Marines attracted more visitors than any of the other service's recruiting displays at the four day airshow
10.jpg
10.jpg

Roger Herman also tries to strike a recruiting pose in front of the Marines' display. It didn't work, as compared to Ben's efforts, and little children were heard to scream and run for the main gate 11.jpg

The Blue Angels shortly after their takeoff to begin their show

Some of the YL-42 pilots and support crew "debriefing" at the "O" Club. Shortly after this picture was taken the Blue Angel / Airshow Groupie Girls arrived. It was a sight to behold, and made scenes from "Top Gun" look tame 13.jpg

YL-42 draws a crowd as she sits on static display at the airshow
14.jpg
14.jpg

This larger than life drill instructor display was a big hit as part of the Marines' recruiting set-up at the airshow. Come to think of it, he looks to be about the size remembered from our first days of boot camp those many years ago 15.jpg

Deak Warner (one of the YL-42 pilots) briefs visitors on the aircraft

The Charger Girls on their way to YL-42 to "boost" morale for the aircrew 17.jpg
17.jpg

The Charger Girls pose with the YL-42 crew...morale was "boosted". Standing L to R are Ben Cascio, Deak Warner, Walt Casey, Mike Zacker, Wayne Stafford, Walt Cohoon and Roger Herman. Kneeling next to the cheerleaders are Steve Long, Jim Moriarty and Ron Luks...as in "lucky" to be next to the Charger Girls
19.jpg

Deak Warner at ease as he observes the Charger Girl's military bearing. "At Ease" was quickly followed by "Parade Rest", followed by "Attention" 20.jpg
20.jpg

Ensly and Jody sign autographs for the crowd in front of YL-42. Suddenly the helo wasn't that big of a draw...go figure
22.jpg

Click on the thumbnail and you will see... "Busted", nice try Deak 23.jpg
23.jpg

Wipe that smile off your face, Marine. It was a job, but somebody had to escort the Charger Girls over to the aircraft
24.jpg
24.jpg

"Volunteers" were in large supply at YL-42...such patriotism! 25.jpg
25.jpg

Just a small portion of the tarmac at MCAS Miramar during the airshow
26.jpg
26.jpg

YL-42 Crew autographs were in high demand...Ron Luks does his patriotic duty 28.jpg
28.jpg

YL-42 Crew autographs were still in demand as the sun began to set slowly in the west...time to "pop a smoke"     HOT!
29.jpg
29.jpg

With his wife observing closely, Deak goes for an autograph in the rear shoulder area. Definitely "an above average in headwork", Deak 30.jpg
30.jpg

Shortly after the autograph session, Deak chows down (check out the grin)
32.jpg
32.jpg

The crew continues to "debrief' over some beers at the VIP "Flight Deck Chalet" just before the night show begins 35.jpg
35.jpg

The night show begins with a little ordnance drop by an F-18...ah, I love the smell of napalm in the evening!
40.jpg
40.jpg

Roger Herman relaxes before the crowds begin to arrive...note the "Jane Call Home" decal on the door...'twas a big hit and we gave away a lot of the decals 41.jpg

What do these two guys know that the rest of us don"t?

Walt Cohoon re-rigs the throttle cables under the "supervision" of his friends. L to R - Mike Zacker, Ron Luks, Walt Cohoon, Steve Long and Deak Warner.

A little "nape" drop to get things started for the daily airshow
45.jpg
45.jpg

Walt Cohoon gets a fuel sample from YL-42... note his "Summer Service Boxers". The crowds immediately dispersed
46.jpg
46.jpg

Always happy to give a "boost" into the aircraft to a potential female crewmember
47.jpg

The "Blues" make a low pass

As the four day show ends, YL-42 is towed out of the static display area in preparation for its departure back to Houston

On media day, YL-42 gets ready to takeoff on one of several flights over the Miramar area giving the local TV and newspaper people a ride in a real helicopter

The above photo was taken by 1st Lieutenant Faustin Wirkus in August 1962. It is a picture of an HMM-163 UH-34D at sunset, as it flies over the Mekong Delta as part of Operation Shufly.
