View Full Version : In defense of Khe Sanh, dropping a total of 59,542 tons of bombs
Concentrated bombardments by B-52s, dropped with precision just outside the perimeter of the outpost, cratered out the North Vietnamese entrenchments and inflicted heavy casualties, forcing them to give up the siege. 2,548 B-52 sorties were flown under the appropriately-named OPERATION NIAGARA in support of the defense of Khe Sanh, dropping a total of 59,542 tons of bombs.
Marine A4 Skyhawks flew more missions in the Khe Sahn than any other aircraft. VMA-311 set a record for the most sorties that will never be broken. It was the most accurate attack aircraft for dumb bombs ever built. I flew them in 67-68 along with 01 Birddogs out of Quang Tri. 500 miles per hour or 90 miles per hour. I like them both.
At Khe Sanh we used to call it Arc Light......or Rolling Thunder........and it was noisy.....but, we felt the blasts in our chests, rather than hearing them. We parked the 46s in the revetments....and ran across the runway to brief missions.....We would poke our heads up like prairie dogs and watch them work the hill country to the South of the strip. What memories.....
