I was stationed at Beaufort in 70-71 attached to the search & rescue unit. In 70 we had uh1k and uh-34 capability, but the 34's were retired and we had 2 H-1k's.
There was a recovery of a f-4 which broke up over the atlantic and i crewed the 34 for that mission but while i was there no helo's crashed but the 34's were retired, sad day she was the best s.a.r bird ever.
Sure would like an update if anyone has any.

I was a crew chief with HMH-362 in June of 1970 when we flew down Beaufort to lift a 34 out of the marsh...I have a photo and it's good...I think the 34 blew the engine and had a pretty hard landing. We took it back to MCAS Beaufort. George Don't have a scanner so if you want to see the photo I'll fax it to you.

Took a magnifying glass to my photo of the 34 we pulled out of the marsh 23 June 1970.The bureau number is 145778.Looks like it may have been a bird from HMH-363 but can't fully read the numbers.Hopefully I can get this photo to someone who can put it on the site. George
If it was BuNo 145778, then I have it as written off on the 22nd of July 1970 whilst on charge to MCAS Beaufort.

I've tried several times to post a picture of the recovery of that bird. George even downsized it for me, but it's still not there. George, can you post it?

ED, I joined HMH-362 in Dec 69 in New River.I'm not sure how long they were in New River before I got there.I was in HMH-363 at LTA from Feb 69 until Dec 69. George
HMM-362 flew their last UH-34s to Da Nang on 20 Aug 69. On 21 Aug HMH-362 was activated at New River. They probably started getting their new 53s not too long after.
