Your Father was a member of a Combined Action Platoon (CAP). My guess is that unit was somewhere near one of the air fields or Bases. Its been a while, but I believe the CAP was made up of a Squad of US Marines and the remainder of the platoon were local popular Forces who lived in the local area. The Marine Corps was unique in that program. I do not believe any other US Force tried to accomplish local integration like the CAP.

I remember watching some of our combat engineers and a few infantrymen accross the river from the hootch area at Quang Tri in 1968; supposedly CAP people putting a roof back on a Vietnamese school-house, and assisting the villagers in other ways.....can also remember having some misgivings about the program when we took fire from the same ville during the '68 Tet Offensive...
