View Full Version : Vmo2/hml167
SGT D.H. Cunningham
I was attached to H&MS - 16, but flew with VMO - 2, 1968-1969.
CPL. Wagner (Rest In Peace Brother) and I flew port & starboard duties, on a mission lovingly called Sniffer. He's listed under KIA incidents as flying with HML - 167. I either don't remember or ???. What was the relationship of HML- 167 and VMO - 2. I also flew as a gunner with VMO - 2, and several other squadrons.
Was I really flighing with HML-167? I was originally with VMO-2 at New River, befor I went into country.
Thank You So Much Doug Cunningham
It sounds like you were on Group Flight Orders and could fly with any MAG-16 Squadron, beginning in April 1968 both VMO-2 & HML-167 were flying the UH-1E out of MMAF under MAG-16 and continued to do that for the rest of 1968.
Here's how I remember it. In Jun/July of 68 HML-167 stood up administratively. I believe Major Dunn was the CO on paper and I was administratively transferred along with some other people. I still considered myself part of VMO-2 since I flew their aircraft. I guess they slowly started to transfer some aircraft but until I left in Aug 68, HML was a paper organisation. How long it took before they became a real squadron I don't know.
One more comment I meant to include. I flew the sniffer when it first came into country. A group out of some R&D outfit in Quantico brought it over. It was supposed to smell urine when you flew it over bad guy country. It had to be flown right at treetop level in bad guy areas. Found out after numerous missions that it couldn't tell the difference between human and monkey urine. Dangerous mission but not as bad as their next idea - the Firefly!

VMO-1 was at New River.
