To HMM-164:

I am a retired TWA pilot and Navy CDR (USNR ret). I was in Vietnam 1965-67 with Patrol Squadron One, USN, at Da Nang, Tan Son Nhut, and Cam Ranh Bay.

I just learned that a fraternity brother of mine at Purdue who was killed in Vietnam does not have a memorial on the Virtual Vietnam Wall. (www.virtualwall.org)

His name is Capt David Frederick. He was assigned to HMM-164, and was killed in a crash on July 30, 1967 on a third run into an LZ.

Several of Dave's fraternity brothers who served in Vietnam would like to prepare a memorial for him to be posted on the Virtual Wall. If possible we would like to have some personal recollections of him from his squadron mates and family that we can incorporate in the memorial.

Thanks for your reply. I had already found the information in the links you posted. I was hoping to learn more about CAPT Frederick and his time in HMM-164 from his squadron mates. I remain hopeful that other Marines who were in the squadron during that time will come forward with additional information to fill out what we have.

Incidentally, my crew was the first VP crew into Vietnam in February 1965. We were initially billeted with the Marines in a compound on the west side of Da Nang AB. When we started taking mortar fire during the night, they brought in the USS Salisbury Sound (a seaplane tender and the flagship of COMPATFOR7thFLT) and we re-located to the ship. They used an Albatross to ferry us into the base for our missions. Anyway, we had a great time with the Marines while it lasted.
