From Ed Kufeldt

Fellow VMO-6 Members,

If you have not been informed, Bob Kowalk is extremely sick. He has an aggressive melanoma skin cancer which has spread to his brain, lungs and adrenal gland. He has gone through numerous surgeries, Cat Scans, MRIs, and rounds of chemo. In an email of Dec. 12, his wife Carol stated that Bob is constantly in pain, doesn't eat, and is on morphine. Bob is at home in a hospital bed in their living room and Hospice is now in attendance and helping. Carol asks that we keep Bob in our prayers. I would suggest we also keep Carol and their family in our thoughts and prayers.

The operations, treatments, and hospital care have been very expensive and they need financial help. Carol and friends of the family are sponsoring a spaghetti dinner on Dec. 15 at the Singara Grotto Hall from 5:00 - 8:00 in Sandusky, OH to raise funds. Knowing that most of us cannot attend, a "Kowalk Benefit Fund" has been established and I'm asking your assistance. Please be generous in helping Bob and Carol. Send contributions to the Fund at 2509 S. Campbell St., Sandusky, OH 44870, which is also the Kowalk's address. They do accept phone calls at 419-626-8245 and their email is B49J@aol.com. Below is a picture of Bob taken after his first round of chemo.

Thanks for your support .

Semper fi,

Ed Kufeldt

It is with great sadness that I write this last e-mail. I have lost my love, my friend and my soulmate of 37 years. Bob passed away on Monday, December 18 at 4:25 P.M. after a courageous battle with cancer. He didn’t have to fight long but he fought hard. His determination was remarkable. The suffering was horrible but the will to beat this never quit. Bob was a very loving person – he loved life and he loved his family and friends. He loved all of you in a very special way. He never talked bad of people and never looked down on or judged people. That was Bob. There isn’t much to say right now -preparations are being made and I am sure he is in heaven right now forming a baseball team or something. He always said he had the best of both worlds. He had all his friends and family here but he will also be reunited with his friends and family in heaven. He will even get to meet a sister he never knew. I know that there are many of you that I will not cross paths with again as I have been brought into your lives through Bob – but I want to thank all from the bottom of my heart for the love, support and prayers you offered to Bob and our family through this time in our lives. God Bless You All and Bob and I would like to wish you “Happy Holidays”. Love, Carol

Carol, my thoughts are with you & your family. Although I never knew Bob, HE WAS A MARINE & that all that counts. May he rest in heaven, knowing that it's a special place for all who guard our earth. "R.T.B."
