Camp J.J. Carroll?

Camp Carroll, just south of the Mutter's Ridge area, was named for Captain Carroll.


Captain James J. Carroll, USMC, was killed in action 05 October 1966

From the Citation for the Navy Cross:

"By his outstanding leadership, unlimited courage,
and utmost devotion to duty,
Captain Carroll reflected great credit upon himself
and upheld the highest traditions
of the Marine Corps and the United Stated Naval Service."

I arrived In country, Jan of 67. After processing through RMK BRJ at Da Nang I was sent on my merry way to Dong Ha. From there I traveled by truck (715) to Camp Carroll. I was assigned to B. Battery 1st of the 12th Mar Artillery. The Army had two units there, The 94th Arty, 175 mm (Long Toms) and a Duster Unit. I was converted to a scout sgt and ended up working with a number of different units all over that area. Lots of Helo action around there. There was a Marine 4.2 Mortar unit also. Whiskey Battery. It was attacked a number of times while I was there. I don't recall any NVA making it through the fence while I was there but it got lots of small arm fire on a constant basis. Nice place wouldn't want to live there though.
