STRATEGY FROM PAGE 5 USS Peleliu (LHA 5) will deploy May 4, in support of the global war on terrorism as part of the Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) 3’s regular deployment rotation.
Peleliu embarked Commander, Destroyer Squadron (COMDESRON) 31 last summer and deployed in support of Pacific Partnership 2007, a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief mission. They returned in September after providing much-needed medical, dental and engineering assistance as well as completing community relations projects in places like Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and the Marshall Islands.
This year, the Peleliu ESG is led by Commander, Amphibious Squadron (COMPHIBRON) 3 and includes the flag ship Peleliu, amphibious ships USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52) and USS Dubuque (LPD 8), the guided-missile cruiser USS Cape St. George (CG 71), and the guided-missile destroyers USS Halsey (DDG 97) and USS Benfold (DDG 65). Support units deploying with COMPHIBRON 3 include Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) 15, the “Surfriders” of Assault Craft Unit (ACU) 1, the “Swift Intruders” of ACU-5 and Beach Master Unit (BMU) 1. Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 45 and Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron (HMM) 165 are providing air support for the deployment.
