8 January 1984 - Marine KIA exiting a helicopter near Beirut

8 January 1984: A Marine is killed by unidentified assailants as he exits a helicopter at a landing zone on the edge of downtown Beirut. The helicopter flew to safety, after returning fire with its machine guns.

    see http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/AMH/...banon82-A.html.

We are looking for details of the incident. NAME and UNIT of MARINE KIA, HELICOPTER SQUADRON, WITNESSES, etc. Any help will be appreciated. We believe it occurred with the helicopter squadron attached to the 22th MAU at the time, which may also be the squadron that participated in the Grenada intervention.

  2. HMM-261 was the squadron attached to 22d MAU at that time. The Command Chronologies for 22d MAU and HMM-261 for that period may have more information.
