Thread: "new" Hmm-262 Old Tigers Website

  1. "new" Hmm-262 Old Tigers Website

    The "NEW" website is: www.hmm-262combatvets.com

As of August 1, 2009, we changed the association statutes and changed our official name to HMM-262 COMBAT HELICOPTER ASSOCIATION in order to include our Matine Brothers & Sisters wo served with our squadron in Iraq, in 2007. As a side note, although we were linking the old website with the new one, we had been experiencing some problems with the hosting and accessing of the previous (VVA) website, so everything has been transferred and modified into this new web address.

Who knows?: Rick Anderson had joined us and I emailed him to tell us about himself and his time with HMM-262. Welcome Aboard Rick!
    Or: Thanks for the info!

My brother is Sergeant Victor Sanchez Jr. He was with Mag 16 HMM 262. He was still in Nam July through August of 1970 before he pulled out for Okinawa

Dale we had an Evans in Boot in '66. That would have been bout right for him to get the training, and arrive on sceene. Just a thought. Could be James Craig. But It has to be something else. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

No Ace, I don't think he would have gone to real boot camp with you. He was from South Florida so they would have sent him off to some other Island resort close by

    Same insigna 1954 (Flying Tigers)

I have a plaque from the unit HMH-361 while I was on Okinawa 1973/1987 with the insigna but it says "Flying Tigers". I was in that unit back in 1954 (Than HMM) when I returned from the Korea "Police Action". It was than at MCAF Santa Ana with the H-19 Helicopters. I wonder is 262 that original unit & insigna ?? PM

    same insigna 1954 (Flying Tigers)

I'd say no paul. The Squadron names should stay the same. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

  18. There are three squadrons with the nickname "Flying Tigers": HMM-262, HMH-361, and VMA-542. There are two squadrons that use "Black Knights" - VMM-264 and VMFA-314. The Marine Corps (unlike the Navy) considers squadron nicknames to be unofficial, and leaves the choice up to the squadron, so you get multiple squadrons using the same nickname at the same time.

    nick names are unoffical

hma1369,Thank you. Thats good to know. I bet only one Squadron will, or ever has had the Name 'The Death Angles'. Thats VMF(AW)235, an F-8 Crusader Squadron. The newer designation is VMFA-235, 'The Death Angles'. They have new Aircraft as well. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

262 had a tiger on it's patch when it was formed at Cherry Point I think in 1951 they operated H-19's then. I have a pix of the original patch somewhere.

  23. Clarification

There has always been a "brotherly" exchange about which Flying Tigers came first, so from official Marine Corps history archives, I submit the following:

    - HMR-262, The Flying Tigers, was "Activated" at Cherry Point, NC in Sep 1951 , then redesignated HMM-262 On Feb 1, 1962

    - HMR-361, The Flying Tigers, was "Activated" at Santa Ana, CA on Feb 25, 1952 then redsignated HMM-361 on Feb 1, 1962.

Jake, you and Tim show HMR-262, then HMM-262 was the 1st Flying Tigers, in Sept.,1951. Thats a long time. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

  32. The HMR(L)-262 patch was designed by Mike Leahy. I believe he said he'd done the designs for all the original MAG-26 squadrons back in the early 50s.

That it is Lurch. Every Reunion I'd get to go to, I'd stock up on the patches. Made Alan have to make a bunch of them to replace what we'd buy. Bet the Crew Chiefs Union was a good one for sure. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.
