I had the pleasure of a day flying with Gen. Armstrong in the copilots seat in 1970. I wasn't aware that he had been one of the main movers in the 46 program, but despite having forgotten more than I knew about the aircraft, he was quite tolerant of a young Lieutenant that was convinced he was the best phrog phlyer around. A gentleman in every way. RIP

I second what Bob says...I had the pleasure of flying the General in 1971 and he was a real class act - hell of a leader! Semper Fi, Sir!

JJ, its good to get to go to reunions and get to visit with the top Brass. This last Squadron reunion, had I gotten to go, I could have had the evening meal with my Gunner, and Gen. Jones. It was a good night my Gunner told me. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

JJ, I Know what you mean. Trying to go to a reunion every year gets expensive. You never forget them, but by the time you pay for one, its time for another one. Someone is getting rich off it, ceretainly not us. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

Ace, do you want to expound on your statement "Someone is getting rich off it, ceretainly not us. " Who are you saying is getting rich from the reunions? Are you talking about the HMM-265 organization or the USMC/Combat Helicopter Association reunions. What evidence do you have of any wrong doing in either organization?

    Re: Maj. Gen. V.a. Armstrong,deceased

I had started a reply to this question put to me today, but after 3-4 lines it was knocked off line. I will say, I was refering to the hotels, tour groups, and everyone else that keeps going up on the reunions prices. That is/was my opinion, and still stand by it. The cruise, which I was going to go on, (a seperate 265 trip),is the highest price for a cruise I've seen advertised in some time. The 14 days of it are way to many for someone to take a week off for vacation, and enjoy it. I was at one time going to take it. Why is this post put in with Maj.Gen V.A.Armstrong, deceased, obit? It could have been put elsewhere. What is the big deal of my saying the reunions are getting way to costly? I have a number of people that e-mail me, call me and let me know they appreciate reading my posts. Now all of a sudden I'm jumped out in an obit about saying the prices are getting out of hand. Thats real good there. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

    Re: Maj. Gen. V.a. Armstrong,deceased

We were on an Emergency Recon Extract one day in 1970. I was the co-pilot in an HMM 364 46. We were being "escorted" by Scarface that day. Gen. Armstrong was flying "Front Seat" on one of the Cobras on this mission. Shit started, We extracted in a deep ravine and taking fire from the sides, just like in an old cowboy movie ambush. We were pulling collective and drooping blades to get the hell out of there and our 50's were raking the hill sides. To my astonishment, here comes one of the Cobras up our port side very close abeam and shooting as well. Our port door gunner is still blazing. Gen Armstrong was in the front seat of that Cobra and we are screaming at the door gunner to cease fire. Fortunately we did not blow that Corbra out of the sky as the gunner was shooting just under him. Whew, that was close.
