From Ky Ha the Repose and LST
Posted for and submitted by Peter Greene oldjarhead@sacoriver.net
Comment by: Bob Langill on Sep 8, 2006 05:17 PM
A Seabee buddy sent me this picture. I saw this LST in October 1967 after it had been dismantled down to the 'tank deck' and was just so much rusting scrap metal. I have seval pics of the remains. Those pics are also shown on www.navsource.org under LST-912/USS Mahnomen County if anyone's interested. At the time I was serving with Mobile Construction Battalion 71 then located at Camp Miller, Chu Lai, RVN. If anyone responds, please put LST-912 in the subject line as 'strange' e-mails wind up in mu greymail and its is to get overlooked and deleted by mistake.
Comment by: bob langill on Sep 8, 2006 07:24 PM Regarding my earlier e-mail on LST-912, the date my pics of the rusting, dismantled hulk was OCTOBER, 1968 NOT October, 1967. Just another senior moment!
Comment by: Mike Nawrath on Sep 12, 2006 02:31 AM Re: LST-912 I was her from 10/70 to 10/71 with the Americal Division after the Marines had all moved up to Da Nang. The then more rusted LST was still very much in evidence. My hooch was right about where this picture was taken from. This brings back old memories. Glad for the link to the story of how the ship got there. I'd love to see your other pictures of this area you mention. Peace.
Comment by: Rick Allison on Sep 30, 2006 10:43 PM
If memory serves me this ship beached on the rocks right around New Years 1966. We were tasked to strip most of the salvagable items of her. We used it as a diving platform during high tide until we moved north to Phu Bai in AUgust of 1967.
