Downed CH-46 (photo 2 of 6)
|
Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam - most likely the morning of 5/14/69 (photo 2 of 6). The photo shows downed HMM-161 No. 45-1/2, which went down in the afternoon of 5/13/69. The photo was taken while J. Jones' "recovery crew" bird, probably HMM-161 No. 28, was approaching a nearby LZ. Based on other birds that were flying on the 13th and at that time, the probable map coordinates of No. 45-1/2's downed location were at or near YD011614. The location was about 1/2 mile due east of Mutter's Ridge (Hills 461, 484, and 400), about 2-1/2 miles south of the DMZ, and about 3 miles north of Route 9, The Rockpile, and Razorback. The effects of Agent Orange on the tree canopy are evident in the photo. The “1/2” designation of bird No. 45 indicates the original No. 45 bird had been destroyed and was replaced with the number 45-1/2.
