 | Purple Fox Recon Insert As Marines board his CH-46, lst Lt. Walt Wise, of HMM-364, takes a few moments to contemplate the mission ahead. Shortly, he will be flying the Recon Marines into an LZ somewhere in I Corps.

 | "SOG" SPECIAL OPERATIONS TROOPS Most POPASMOKE Aircrew worked a little "SOG" at some time. I am sure we all had trouble telling the U.S. troops teams, which often were mostly CID troops (BRU), from the NVA troops. Especially on a hot extract these troops all camied up and moving fast towards your Helicopter would give you cause to doubt your decision as to if they were Friendly or NVA. You had about 2 seconds or less to decide. you can just imagine how difficult this was under heavy enemy fire or in the dark of night. Posted by Admin on 2010-06-27 |

McNamara III on May 1, 2006 05:34 PM If this photo was taken on April 22, 1969 around 4:00 PM in the afternoon, approximately 5 miles southwest of An Hoa and if the Recon Team was named Asparagus III, then I was the Aircraft Commander of Peachbush 3-2 and carried out the extract of the team who had come under fire by an overwhelming force of NVA.

 | CH-53 SPIE RIG VIETNAM I witnessed one of these and the CH-53 put off such intense Rotor Wash that you would have thought the extraction was taking place durring a Tornado.
The Recon team was thrilled, they said that the NVA would never be able to hold a fighting position in close if the pickup was by 53 because the rotor wash was blowing stuff all over the place.
