At the generator on Marble Mt., 1/68
Need help identifying EM from HMM 363, 1/68
Comment by: Bill Storck on Feb 6, 2010 10:51 AM
Don't know who that is but I worked across the street (Phone guy- Roseanne Alpha)- Had to change out generators before they ran out of fuel- Oh was there hell to pay when we forgot and the base went dark-
Comment by: Chuck Coster 2533 on May 12, 2010 10:16 AM
Hey - Bill Storck Roseanne Alpha - worked next door to you at the radio shack. There for 2 tours in 67 and 68. When not in the field ran the TSC 15 van and other normal stuff. When were you there?

Best

Chuck
Comment by: Bill Storck on Jul 1, 2010 09:44 AM
Chuck- Was there the same trime you were- So I have to assume we drank beer togather. If I recall your Hooches were next to ours- I also worked out of the Aif Force hut with the Micro Wave link to Da Nang- It was air conditioned (for the gear- not us). Then one night a Marine Major was all heated up when his phone didn\'t work and tried to force his way in and Air man Fuller locked and loaded on him and barred his way- The next day we moved our stuff into the comm shack-

Best regards-
Bill (Silicon Valley Ca.)

HMM 363 Marines at work?
Need help identifying the Marine on the far left? Photo taken at Phu Bai around mid-year, 1968. Crew Chiefs Cpl. John Streeter ( kneeling) and Cpl Olsen ( standing far right). They must be about to install this radial "8" since their tee shirts are so white and the engine looks so clean.

HMM-164 YT-22 Crash
Found this in my dad's pix when he passed away recently. No date or location information. He got out in 1969, so it was taken between '64 and '69. Possibly from Vietnam.
See photos # 1522 & 1523
Seems like I recall this incident as occurring in the Spring or early Summer of 68 -- when the squadron was still onboard the Valley Forge and a crew went down to DaNang on the mail run. I think this is the post office at the strip at DaNang (or what was left of it - g). I'm at work, so can't check, but I also seem to recall there's one or more pics of this in the sqdn yearbook. I believe that this is the Post Office at White Beach and the pilot was Maj. Bob Nelson. From that day on his call sign has been "Post Office Bob".

Affectionately known as. Yes maybe but… Then Major Nelson was a highly skilled and a fantastic pilot. Please trust me on this one, Nelson was my C.O. in 261 at New River, my X.O. at Phu Bai with HMM 164 and once climbed in my face when I had a mind phase on a Check flight and forgot an essential in flight emergency safety procedure.

He was a FIJI, a fantastic pilot and a damn good Marine Officer. I will forever be grateful to have made his acquaintance.

... and I wasn't paid a penny to make this statement.

I"m submitting this picture for Bruce Willey. According to Bruce, this picture was taken at NAS Glenview in early spring 1972 prior to it"s departure for the bone yard at Davis-Monthan AFB. From what Bruce recalls, it turned out to be President Eisenhower"s aircraft and has been restored. Bruce would like to know if any of our members know where it is now.

I was the crew chief, we lost an engine while on the approach. I was leaning out the left gun window when we went down. The only injury was to my lower lip caused by my lower teeth punching through. This occured mid summer of '68 at Dong Ha.

I came out of the field on January 27, 1968 to get my quarterly flight time. Some of you may recall that I was assigned to HMM-FACKED at the time. Alpha-3, 3/3/3. I think this photo was taken shortly before the midnight ceasefire was supposed to begin. Everyone was getting a load on, except the medevac crew. HMM-163 Section 3
HMM-163 Section 3. The aircraft is one from Section 3. It has the number 18 between the painted on eyes. Possibly happened at Quang Tri about April or May 1967. Does anyone remember anything about this inccident? Contact Dick at dlsreno@ix.netcom.com Submitted by Dick Goodwill
My first day as a crew chief was a memorable one! I believe this might have been my first helicopter as a crew chief. Lost our tail rotor at about 50 feet as we were coming into Quang Tri to pick up a Colonel for an admin hop. Pilot dropped the collective and we hit so hard that the right wheel collapsed. My gunner was Bennie "Bear" Brake and he was sitting spread eagle on the floor. He has pictures of the bird, but I've never seen them. What a flash back! Can't remember the names of the pilot or co-pilot. Everyone thought that we didn't rotate the tail rotor to make sure the splined coupling engaged. They eventually found out it was caused by the metal fatigue in the coupling spring. This was after a few more went down with tail rotor failures. HMM-362 EDs FIRST RIDE A CRASH????
These pictures are of my first ride. We were about 45 minutes into the mission when we lost tail rotor function. I would like to try to make contact with the other 3 crew members if possible. This would be the pilot, he may have been Russ Randall,co-pilot, and the CrewChief, Ronald B. Gusta, Ronald lives in Iowa. , as I was designated "gunner". The incident happened on July 18, 1966. I had sent some e-mails and posted on the 362 site but I think I gave July 16 as the date. According to USMC records, BUNO 149379 was stricken on the 18th and I"m convinced that"s the day it happened. The situation was a med-evac out of what must have been an ARVN compound in MoDuc. I think that"s in the QuangNgai area. We went in early morning to pick-up 4 ARVN"s--------3 "shell-shock" and 1 with leg amputee at the hip. As we picked up out of the compound, we lost tail rotor function at about 75 feet and the pilot brought the a/c down hard on her left side. The pictures are of the remains taken the next morning by Cpl. Rich L Houghton. Crew and med-evacs managed to get out of the a/c. This was one un-forgettable ride, as the blades cleared timber and the 1820 must have went to a "million" RPM. It finally died as flames consumed the a/c in just a matter of seconds. The a/c hit on the left side with the cargo door up. I think the co-pilot escaped out the left window, as the a/c was laying across about a four foot deep ditch. I"m not sure which side the pilot came out. Ed Tatman [etatman@kavts.tec.ok.us]

Village of Phu Bai, 1968
On one of our unauthorized trips to Hue after Tet of 68, we would sometimes stop in the village outside the base. This was just a photo I snapped with one of the guys interacting with the kids. Obviously they were friendly. It was nice to interact with the local people and find people who were glad you were there. Obviously, they didn"t all feel that way. One of the guy"s last name was Evans, from Operations, and the other we called Moose, from Reading, Pa, I believe. If anyone knows of them or remembers them please drop me a line.

screen shots from "Vietnam's Helicopter Heroes" video tape
While looking through files much to my surprise I ran across this posted picture. The guy in the flight suit is me, Ken Foran. I was assigned TAD to HMM-362 as a machine gunner when the 46's were grounded due to aft pylon "problems". I was with HMM-164 and 362 was next door at Phu Bai. I have seen the series on TV and was shocked to see myself. I have wondered how to get a copy of it, if you have information I would appreciate it. Later on during "Tet" I was also in a 362 34 that lifted out of the soccer field at Hue and a motar round exploded under the engine just after we lifted off. The engine was damaged, we had multiple amputees on board and the closest place to land was on the USS. Sanctuary off the coast. The ship turned into the wind and went straight in, no approach and made a very hard landing; all were safe and sound. We secured the rotor blades and pushed the plane to as far as we could to the edge to keep the pad open. Two days later we were lifted; bird and all back to Phu Bai, while the Sanctuary headed to the Philippines. Semper Fi! Ken Foran // Ken Foran [xken@sssnet.com]
