My wife and I were neighbors of Jeff and his wife at North Topsail Beach, NC, during his deployment at Camp Lejuene, NC. We were with his wife when he was listed MIA in Greneda. We thought of Jeff, not as our neighbor, but as a son. The world lost a wonderful man when it lost Jeff. We shall never forget him. Jack & Luann Christine Davidson, NC

I was a neighbor and brother Marine of Jeff Scharver. I lived next door to Jeff and Patti on Topsail Island. Jeff was a great guy and a great Marine. His actions in Grenada came as no surprise to me. I can still see Jeff leaving my house the night before he deployed. Semper Fi brother... I miss you.

An LZ south of Vandy was hit during the night by the NVA. I was copilot on the 46 that was called to resupply the Marines in the LZ. We may have had medevac duty too - I don't remember. In the morning we were relieved by a 46 that Cpl Akins crewed. On its first trip into the LZ it was hit and went down. Actually, it may have been hit as it lifted from the LZ. Our 46 was still nearby, so we were called to head back to the LZ and medevac any casualties. Cpl Akins was one of the medevacs. If I remember correctly, we took him straight to the hospital ship. I remember sadly that he was badly burned.

Manuel Denton was my uncle, he was an HM3 when he died 10/08/1963, while in a SAR mission. He is actually in the 3rd row between the HM2 and the HN with glasses.
He was finally laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetary on August 7, 2008. He had left behind three (3) daughters. They along with his former wife and my mom (his only sibling) along with his former wife and numerous family and friends were present when he and newly found remains of 3 of his fellow crewman who had previously been laid to rest were given the Honored and memorable Christian burial that they all deserved. You gave your lives trying to rescue a downed aviator, the pain of your loss still remains with us all. Yet the memories of you and honor to have the blood line of an American HERO course thru our veins will live on forever. GOD Bless the Men who made the ultimate sacrifice & GOD Bless AMERICA!!!

HMM 262 '68 - Khe Sanh Siege Routine. Upon completion of the day's resupply missions in and out of the hill positions, the last thing we would do would be to land at Khe Sanh's Charlie Med and pick up the KIA's. Some days there would be one or two, other days it would take mulitple a/c loads. It was always a somber ride out to Dong Ha for drop-off. It's been 39 years and I can still feel those rides. I have a gut feeling this happened on the 19th of May 1968. Fox 2/1 met with 300 NVA, 19 marines were killed an 30 plus wounded, 3 tanks were destroyed with one damaged. It was Ho Chi mins birthday and he didn't get the present he wanted, 66 plus NVA KIA

Wiseman, John Samuel CPL CrewChief HMM-363 680423 Comments on Incident: This incident happened on my first of three tours in Viet Nam. John was a great guy, a true friend. He was shot in the lung by a sniper. We all called him "Big John.” He had many friends. I think of John all the time. He is missed! Submitted by MGYSGT George T. Curtis USMCR (Ret), BROTHER Crew Chief HMM-363 Comments on Incident: On April 23rd 1968 John Wiseman and I were flying supplies out of Hue. John's copter was flying wing most of the day and my plane flew lead. The LZ was very close to the base so we flew at tree top level. We flew the route all day without incident. As evening closed in our pilots decided to switch leads. When we landed in the LZ, I looked over at John's plane and saw him lying face down and I could see several hits on his copter. John was carried to my plane. When we took off we took heavy, heavy fire. Once out of the LZ I tried hard to revive John but the bullet had caused too much damage. John was a very fine human being with a great sense of humor. I wonder about his family often. We were very good friends. Submitted by Victor L. Con Thien was "Hell on Earth!" This is how my cousin LCpl. Stephen Hinkley ( KIA Con Thien 6 May 68) described it in his last letter home dated 5 May 68. Stephen loved the Corps and I had visited with him two days prior to his death. He was in good spirits but he was sure to tell me that Con Thien was the most dangerous place on earth. Captain Bobby Frank Galbreath, VMO-6
http://www.popasmoke.com/kia/incidents.php?incident_id=116 http://www.virtualwall.org/dg/GalbreathBF01a.htm NAVY CROSS CITATION 16FEB68: Captain Galbreath : “For extraordinary heroism while serving as a Pilot with Marine Observation Squadron SIX, in the Republic of Vietnam on 16 February 1968. Captain Galbreath launched as Wingman in a flight of two armed UH-1E helicopters diverted to support the emergency extraction of an eight-man reconnaissance team which was heavily engaged with a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force six miles northwest of Dong Ha. Arriving over the designated area, he immediately initiated his attack and made repeated strafing runs on the enemy positions. Although five Marines had been recovered, subsequent attempts to rescue the remaining men failed due to a heavy volume of ground fire, which had seriously damaged three helicopters. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Captain Galbreath volunteered to evacuate the surrounded men. Fully aware of the extreme danger to himself and his crew, he unhesitatingly commenced his approach, but was forced to abandon the landing when his aircraft sustained several hits. Completely disregarding his own safety, he initiated his second approach and skillfully maneuvered his aircraft through the hostile fire into the landing zone. Ignoring the intense fire, which was striking his aircraft, he remained in the fire swept area while the men embarked. Lifting from the hazardous zone, his helicopter was struck by a burst of enemy fire and crashed, mortally wounding Captain Galbreath. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, he inspired all who served with him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.”

I remember that day well. A bunch of us were down below where the helicopters were stored. Someone came down and said that Jeff accidentally shot himself. It was understood that Jeff thought that the barrel of his revolver rotated after the trigger was pulled and during. The hammer was on an empty chamber and Jeff put the gun to his chin and pulled the trigger. Very sad. Jeff was a real nice guy.
