Curtis / DEC 2002 Comment by: Mike Dunn on Apr 4, 2010 09:27 PM If memory serves me this occurred the same day they hit the movie pit just before a Raquel Welch movie was going to start. I was in the dark room developing film and was also on perimeter duty so I had to hurry down to my assigned bunker. I never saw most of the damage until the next day. Comment by: Lev Keely on Apr 7, 2010 02:23 PM Two primary hooches were involved, the OR (treatement hooch) and a hooch next to it where a FNG was sleeping. I usually slept in the OR but was flying that night on Medevac.

to my girlfriend, which has now been my wife for 40 years this year. I am still a firm believer in the
Corps. MAG-16 was always being shelled from

 | Quang Tri- Third Medical Battalion Bringing in the wounded to 3rd Med Triage circa October, 1968. UPDATED 27 Aug 2002 " I submitted this picture of the medivac helicopters at the landing pad in Quang Tri. It was taken on 35 mm slide between Aug and Dec 68. If you need a more exact date I can look on the side for the developing date. I was a Corpsman with Kilo 3/9/3 from Dec 67 to Aug 68 at which time I was transferred to Third Med in Quang Tri. Rfellek39@aol.com " Comment by: Lou Salamon on Jul 23, 2010 08:33 PM I served here too, with Hotel 2/3, as a Corpsman. When we were pulled from the bush in Sept 69, I ran medevacs from our bldg next to the LZ out to the Repose; many trips back and forth from the 3rd med Bn hosp to the choppers. most were CH 46D by then.. we also had Air Force guys in our hootch, # 37, who ran fixed wing medevacs from the air field across the road to distant hospitals. We left in late Nov 69 with 3rd Marines to Okinawa. Posted by User Deleted on 2010-07-25 |

Now I'm the Chief of Police in Sweetwater, Texas. While surfing one day, I found the Popasmoke site. Great site! I visit regularly. Brings back some good (and some not so good) memories. I love it though.
Thank you.

POPASMOKE REUNION Pensacola Florida Oct 2002
"The appointed hour for the day"s mission had arrived. Leaving the security of the LZ, Burt and I made our way into the vill. As we commenced our trek, a special stop along the way had to be made before proceeding to NAS Pensacola. With that accomplished, we reached the bridge crossing over to the base by following the streets so often used by flyers in preparation of their calling. The garden of stone was just ahead and to the right. In Section 42, stone 529, we paid our respects to a one of our country’s heroes, "Doc Jones."

been the rocketing of the sickbay at Marble Mountain - Da Nang. This would have been in 1969, I do not remember the exact month, but I can still recall clearly the heat, and smells as though it happened yestereday. I also remember trying to keep Bobby Beckman HM3 alive even though he was missing both legs and one arm with multiple entry and exit wounds.

Bills hooth was 3 or 4 hoothes when the attach took place. It was july 1969 as best as I can remember, can't recall the date.
Comment by: bob estrada on Dec 16, 2008 01:50 PM the day was aug.19 1969, a very bad day in my life, lost 3 good friends. don bill and mike. Comment by: George Lovell on Dec 18, 2008 05:53 AM I remember this well. My hooch was just down the road across from the Post Office. I believe the Marine in the top right of the picture in the dark green t-shirt was in VMO2 Ordnance. Can’t remember his name at this time. Stan Durst (SP) VMO2 Ordnance was awarded the Purple Heart because of this incident. George Lovell VMO2 68-69. Comment by: John VanDamme, HM3 "a.k.a. Doc V.D" on Oct 19, 2009 02:05 PM I was a MAG-16 corpman that lived in one of the hooches across the street from the entrance to sickbay, which was just west of this photo and to the north. I have other photos of this incident. Comment by: Mike Dunn on Feb 23, 2010 09:33 PM I was part of MAG 16 and I was in country from December 1969 to November 1969. I worked in the parachute loft and was a door gunner for awhile with HMM 263 in June and July of 1969.
My recollection of this day is there was a Raquel Welch movie that was going to play and they hit the movie pit area and Sick Bay was close and also got hit. I was developing some film during the attack and I had perimeter duty so I had to get back to my hootch and pick up my gear and get down to the perimeter adjacent to the ARVN base. I remember the fellow who lost his legs and I always wondered what happened to him.

Comment by: Alan Bsham on Apr 22, 2008 09:35 AM I got to MAG-16 as an aviation medicine tech in December 1970 and started flying as one of the medevac docs soon after. I'm not in this picture, which may have been taken before I got there. ..... What a great bunch of guys, Pookey, Stretch, Beaner, et al. WALD, CCE on Jun 24, 2009 02:22 PM I just heard from Tony Mead yesterday after 38 years, and he pointed me towards this picture. I was familiar with the website (which I have visited many times), but I didn't know we were here! What a great group of guys! I miss them all. Yes, Twig, it is I - Jay in the corner at the age of 19! I'm sorry to say I look quite different now, however! I remember you used to keep us entertained with your guitar, and you were quite an eloquent singer as well. I've spoken with Kim Kelly, (a fellow Texan in Sweetwater) and John (Pookey), and now Tony (Stretch). Great to hear from them all. Beaner, give me a shout when you get a chance, Brother! I was excising an old infected wound that would not heal. It finally quite draining 20 yrs later. Bunker Bob (HMM 361's flight surgeon talked me through it. Bunker Bob only left the bunker on Sept 3rd to get the hell out of Dong Ha, Bob went on to become a famous eye surgeon and speed boat racer out of Miami). Get the picture out of the corpsman standing in front of the transplanted palm trees in front of the sickbay. I think the 361 boys would remember that. The Xo chewed us out big time for taking the ambulance out in the village to procure the trees. That picture was taken 3 days before Sept 3rd.

He was finally laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetary on August 7, 2008. He had left behind three (3) daughters. They along with his former wife and my mom (his only sibling) along with his former wife and numerous family and friends were present when he and newly found remains of 3 of his fellow crewman who had previously been laid to rest were given the Honored and memorable Christian burial that they all deserved. Kimheerkens@aol.com Comment by: Jim Russell on Apr 25, 2006 07:23 PM With regard to Pete Bossman. He was from Buffalo, NY, as am I. I met him while I was TAD to VMO-2 in 66 from HAMS-17 in Iwakuni Japan. He and another corpsman, also from Buffalo would get together at the e-club on the beach at MMAF and drink beer (usually warm) and reminisce and dream of the states and what we would do when we get back. He was a great guy with a great sense of humor and a tribute to the uniform he wore. (Cpl.)Jim Russell USMC. '63-'67. Posted by Admin on 2006-04-27 |

 | Unknown Corpsman, sickbay MMAF, Winter 1970 Any help on ID of this Navy Corpsman, contact us at: MarinePatches@aol.com I ran across this photo while searching for corpsman websites. I believe it to be myself. Taken by Lcpl Clark Rowland who was being treated at that sick bay for a bad case of "jungle rot". I was on tad waiting for a transfer to 1-7 at hill 55. I was a Navy Corpsman who served with Mag-16 at Marble Mountain, performing medevacs. Although the photo is somewhat out of focus it shows distinct facial and body posture characteristics of myself. Unfortunately Lcpl Rowland is no longer with us to verify this info, as he was KIA at hill 55 in July 70. If you have any further questions please advise.
I was thrilled and excited to find the popasmoke web site and am interested in membership in this organization. It is a most memorable time of my honorable service. I am not one of the RVN Vets who is ashamed of my service. I currently belong to VFW Post # 2953 in Evansville In.
My time with MAG-16 was one of the most rewarding and heartbreaking times of my RVN service until being wounded myself and evacuated to Trippler Army Hospital in May '71.
