Ai Van Pass
Taken in February 1966 from an HMM163 H-34; I believe there was a Hawk missle battalion on the pass at this time, for sure some Marines there. Seems like a .50 cal was always somewhere in the vicinity, at least I recall it wasn't wise to fly directly over the pass itself, such as was done in this photo.

Mortar damage, HMM-163 H-34 at Phu Bai
A follow-on to a previously posted picture; Mr. Ferguson will probably recognize the aircraft as well as some of the people working on it. Not the best picture but it does show some of the damage a mortar round can do in close quarters.

In Flight Lunch
It was a frequent task in HMM-363 to take indigents to or from some outpost. Makes you kind of wonder how this family fared over the years.

VNAF-219th " KINGBEES" CH-34Ds
The Vietnamese Air Force (VNAF) 219th KINGBEES flew the CH-34Ds ( yes, CH) as a special Operations Squadron. I crewed one of HML-367s "HOVER COVER" UH-1E Huey Gunships out of Phu Bai as Gunship support for many of these missions. The 219TH was a "BALLSY" Squadron. All Marine Helicopter Squadrons participated in "SOG" and we ALL deeply Respect the 219TH.

HMM-363 "YZ-13" TET 1968
A great photo of YZ-13 one of HMM-363s " LUCKY RED LIONS" UH-34Ds . This photo was taken in early 1968 just after the Navy made us change our high side numbers ( I.E. 66,67,77,84) to 1- 24. The Navy Air Boss aboard the USS Iwo Jima complained that it was too hard to track the aircraft so to avoid confusion, all the side numbers were changed. Other Squadrons followed suit shortly after us and changed to low numbers.

HMM-363 & HML-367 Phu Bai Summer 68
Great photo of HMM-363s Flight line at Phu Bai ( Second time at Phu Bai in 68 for 363) by combat Aircrewman Bob Greer ( Popasmoke member). Bob was serving his second tour with HMM-363s Lucky red Lions Avionics Shop. Bob flew as my gunner on many "HAIRY" missions. I believe the Marine in the photo is one of our finest pilots, Lt. Frank Wickersham ( COL. USMC Ret) . You will notice that we did not have revetments on this Flight Line. The Hueys are HML-367s UH-1E Gunships from the "HOVER COVER" Flight Line.

HMM-363 YZ22 No Tail Wheel "OOPS" Hill 881S TET 68
YZ-22 lost it"s Tail Wheel Assembly while pulling Medevacs off Hill 881 South.I was the Crew Chief ( L/CPL George T. Curtis, HMM-363,67-68 ). The maintenance crews rigged a pallet with sandbags and we landed safely at Phu Bai. Photo provided by HMM-363s Lucky Red Lions Flight Line Chief, SSGT Larry G. "POPS" Powell (GYSGT USMC Ret). SSGT Powell served as both a Crew Chief & the Flight Line Chief 67-68.Loosing Tail Wheel assemblys was experienced by all UH-34 Squadrons in Nam. This time we hit the berm of a large crater, taking off during a heavy motar attack while completing a Medevac mission on Hill 881 south ( One of Khe Sanhs supporting hills closest to the DMZ).My other Vietnam Squadrons A/C , HML-367 "SCARFACE" UH-1E Huey Gunships can been seen in the background. When HMM-363 rotated stateside to switch from UH-34Ds to CH-53s, I served three more years in Nam with HML-367 "SCARFACE" (69, 70 & 71).
