I am a Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran. In January of 1970 I was on a re-supply CH53 that originated at LZ 401 (1st Mar Div Recon LZ at Camp Reasoner) and made several stops along the way to my destination LZ Ross. When we took off from LZ Baldy (last stop before LZ Ross), we started taking AK 47 fire from the treeline. We all fired back from the open windows but one or more of the AK rounds severed some wires/cables to the tail rotor. The CH 53 started spinning out of control and the pilot was able to hard land the CH 53 inside of the wire. There was at least one wounded Marine (shot through his shin). The rest of us went back to the LZ at Baldy and caught the next chopper to LZ Baldy. I think that this may be a photo of that CH 53. Maybe not? Do you have any info on location or dated? -Submitted by: Bill Lavelle [billav@aol.com] 2010-08-25
