I WAS AT DANANG AFB ALL OF 65. I ATE AT THE MAAG HOTEL IN DOWNTOWN DANANG. GREATEST SHRIMP FRIED RICE I EVER ATE FOR $1 lOBSTER WAS $3. A BUDDY OF MINE ATE 4 FISHHOOKS THERE ONE NIGHT AND THREW THEM UP WITHOUT GETTING HOOKED. THEY WERE BRAND NEW VERY SHARP GOLD FISHOOKS. HE ATE MY LOBSTER AND I ATE HIS STEAK. HE HAD NEVER HAD LOBSTER. A WAITER GLARED AT US ALL THE TIME WE WERE IN THERE AND I KEPT A VERY CLOSE EYE ON HIM. I KNOW THAT THOSE FISHOOKS WERE IN MY LOBSTER AND MY BUDDY AT THEM. HE WAS SO DRUNK HE PASSED OUT ON THE WAY BACK TO THE BASE AND WE CARRIED HIM INTO THE BARRACKS AND PUT HIM IN HIS BUNK. WE WERE PLAYING CARDS AND HE BARFED ON THE FLOOR. I TOLD MY BUDDY TO GET HIS ASS IN THERE AND CLEAN IT UP BECAUSE HE TOOK HIM DOWNTOWN AND GOT HIM DRUNK. HE HAD NEVER DRANK BEFORE. HE CAME BACK WITH TWO FISHOOKS AND SAID LOOK WHAT I FOUND IN HIS VOMIT. WE DECIDED THAT THERE WAS NO WAY HE COULD HAVE SWALLOWED THOSE AND THREW THEM BACK UP WITHOUT GETTING HOOKED. THEY WERE 2 INCHES LONG. IN ABOUT 30 MINUTES HE THREW UP AGAIN AND WE ALL JUMPED UP AND WENT TO SEE. HE HAD THROWN UP TWO MORE FISH HOOKS. I CALLED OUR CAPTAIN AND GOT HIM OUT OF BED AT 1 AM AND HE TOOK HIM OVER TO GET HIM XRAYED. THE NEXT MORNING HE COULD NOT BELIEVE US WHEN WE TOLD HIM WHAT HAD HAPPENED. I TOLD HIM YOU WILL BELIEVE IT WHEN YOU GO TO WORK, HE WAS THE CAPTAINS ORDERLY. HA HA -Submitted by: CHARLES GLACKMAN [LonglineCharlie@comcast.net] 2010-06-12

I was in that area from 7/66 to 8/67, DaNang was never off limits while I was there. We went to the USC, the DaNang Hotel, the White Elephant, and the Officers Cub often. I borrowed my Lts 2ns Lt bars are he got his JG bars. Ha. I think the Statute of Limitations is up by now. The only trouble we ever had in DaNang was with the QC. They hated us, and we hated them. The people were mostly of French Extraction. At least the ones in the hotels and businesses. -Submitted by: Gary Moore [jvmoore98@yahoo.com] 2009-03-22

I remember Dog Patch - had a 2nd Class that just couldn't stand it - just had to get some - escaped to Dog Patch on his day off (once every 17 days) and ended up with the clap at least twice that I can remember. I spent one night in a very elegant hotel on the river side and didn't sleep very well - scared shitless! Worked nights in E. Danang, liberty for us was going to the PX at the AFB. First group to house at Camp Tien Sha - before white picket fences and security sailors with polished boots - ugh! 1965 - 1966 -Submitted by: Ray Long SK3 [rlong@ipsadvantage.com] 2009-08-11

I remember sneaking into the city, It was off limits then, and going to the Hung Dao Hotel and couldn't believe they had flush toilets there. You just squatted over a hole in the floor and let loose, pull a chain and it flushed. Ran into C.I.A.guys there in civilian clothes. Weird war.
