Cowboy seems to be the nome de guerre for a Captain Tran Van Laun, VNAF 219 Squadron, and as above was a Kingbee pilot - from what is written about Cowboy [Capt Van Laun] he was greatly admired by the US personel who worked with him for his bravery and for being a truly loyal ally who put himself at risk more often than was required to extract SOG personal from deadly situations. Happily it appears that Cowboy survived the war, and after 1975 made it to the USA. It appears that there is some confusion as to where he may have settled, but one source asserts he died in Oregon in 2001 [See http://www.vhpadata.org/dir/D05hist.pdf, sec. III, 1., col. 2]. It is sad that a number of sources recounting SOG operations refer to Cowboy, but do so claiming his name is unknown - hopefully this is not the case. -Submitted by: William Maynard [wmaynard@astate.edu] 2008-06-05
