Helo Carriers in the Attack
Something we probably won't see again in our lifetime. One half of the Amphibious Assault Carrier Fleet, in the northern part of the Arabian (Red) Sea. Semper Fi. I love the smell of jet fuel in the morning. Buck Malcolm Massie buckster61@earthlink.net This photo was taken in the Pursian Gulf waters, not the Red Sea. It was in the spring of the year, around the April/May time frame when the sand storms were so bad and AFTER the task force of the Red Sea had to 'beat feet' around the Arabian Penninsula due to being denied airspace over the 'other' "peaceful muslim nations" R.W. The six amphibious assault ships of CTF 51 photographed APR 03 in the Northern Arabian Gulf were arranged in formation in numerical order like bowling pins and were: USS TARAWA (LHA-1) flagship for RADM Marsh; USS SAIPAN (LHA-2), USS KEARSARGE (LHD-3), USS BOXER (LHD-4), USS BATAAN (LHD-5), and USS BON HOMME RICHARD (LHD-6). USS NASSAU (LHA-4) was also assigned to CTF 51, but she was operating in a different part of the AO. In all, 7 of the 12 big deck amphibious assault ships commissioned at the time were task-organized into the largest amphibious task force since Korea.
