J.B. BECKER W CAPTURED NVA FLAG

JOHN 'KENTUCKY BURLEY' BECKER KIA August 27, 1968. Just four days previously John was flying as gunner on a mission with Cpt. Key as pilot when they landed and captured this NVA flag. (See my VN Diary entries for Aug 23, through Sept 3, 1968. Also Sept 30, 1968.)

John and I went to the same grade school, St. Joseph's in Cold Spring and we were in the same class from grade 1 through 8. I also remember John as a great guy, always kind, always ready to smile and laugh. After the 8th grade I moved away and we lost touch. When I heard of his death in 1968 I was deeply saddened that such a genuinely nice human being was taken so early in his life. Many years later when I was at a scientific meeting in Washington DC, I made a pilgrimage to the Vietnam Memorial and got a rubbing of John's name. In the next year or so our grade school will have a reunion and John B will be there because I will take your entry in the diary, his picture with the NVA flag, and the rubbing of his name from the memorial in DC. Thanks for posting memories of John and thereby keeping his memory alive. Terrence A Scahill
