We had just come off the "mat" to the interior guard bunker when the VC came through the corner where the VMO-2 ordinance tent was. They moved up the two lines of UH-!Es and then down the mat through the '34's. The corpman killed was Chief Gelien(sp?).......There is more....... Comment by: Joe Johnston on Mar 22, 2009 12:12 PM I was on interior guard duty when the VC hit us, and had just taken my post on the flight line when the first chopper exploded. As the VC swept down the mat, tossing satchel charges into and alongside the planes, a half-dozen of us were waiting at a bunker adjacent to the flight line. When the VC came into view, running for an exit, we opened fire. It was short and intense. Although we were hellbent on killing our attackers, it's doubtful that we brought any of them down. However, it was gratifying to walk among the bodies when firing had stopped and an unofficial "all clear" was given.
