• Memorial Day Weekend at The Wall 2008

Memorial Day Weekend will soon be here. POPASMOKE will once again be setting up the tent (hootch) at 20th and Constitution Ave. near The Wall. Come and join the POPASMOKE crew for a great weekend meeting and greeting Veterans, their families, and the many others who come to pay tribute.

The POPASMOKE crew will be setting up on the evening of Friday, May 23rd about 7:00PM. We can use all the help that you can give for the set up and manning the hootch over the weekend.

The hootch will be open from 0800 to about 1600 on Saturday and Sunday. Monday hours will be 0800 to about 1400 hrs.

POPASMOKE wreath laying ceremony at The Wall is 1100 hrs. on Monday the 26th. Muster is at the POPASMOKE tent at 1030 hrs.

For those of you have never seen it, the Rolling Thunder motorcycle ride past The Wall is something you should see at least once. If memory serves me, it usually starts about 1100 hrs. on Sunday. You also owe yourself a visit to "Thunder Alley" at 23rd and Constitution Ave.

Please advise "Crazy Joe" Scholle or Larry Zok if you can help with this important POPASMOKE event.

    Many thanks and Semper Fi.

      Change 1, 5/26/08

The Parks Dept. permit says that the ramp to The Wall will be closed at 1100 hrs, presumeably for the security check before the VIP arrival and their speeches. Wreath laying ceremony will be moved up to 1045 hrs to prevent any conflict. Please adjust your arrival accordingly. Sorry for any inconvenience.

      Many thanks and Semper Fi.

        What a week-end

Folks, I will try and post some of the photos of our week-end at the Wall. The Great looking Blonde is Michelle who was one of Dean Martins Golddiggers and was a member of Bob Hopes Christmas Tours in 69 & 70. One very classy lady.

                From Michelle (Golddigger)

Hello Larry and all you great Marines,

Michelle DellaFave here from The Golddiggers and Dingalings,

I am so blown away from my Rolling Thunder Memorial Day experience that I suppose it will be days before I recoup. First of all seeing all the Vietnam Vets and the awesome motor cycles, back in Washington DC, then having Larry say he remembered me after all these years, wow… from the time he very gallantly helped me out of a chopper after we visited a hospital in Vietnam. I remember the hospital and our rides on the big helicopters. I remember how we had some great guys escort us to safety… there was Larry… he even kept the picture all these years. I was so touched and so happy I could finally sign it. Pauline Antony, another Golddigger from England signed as well. What a sweet and dear guy.

I was very honored the Marines asked me to carry the wreath to the Wall. My two trips with Bob Hope to entertain on his Christmas tours are great memories, but to help carry the wreath is an honor so very special to me, it is something I will never forget. I was so happy I could serve in some way other than sing and dance. I met the color guard and they are outstanding young men, and the bag pipers who played “Amazing Grace,” so beautifully… and then the sound of taps… when a powerful memory etched in my mind. I will cherish it forever. If anyone ever gets to the VA hospital in Washington DC please say hello to a young man, 24, who has brain trauma from an injury. I pray he will improve every day. His name, John Lake. I met him when Lindsay Bloom and I as “Blue Eyed Soul,” did a show there. My very special soldier. If anyone sees him tell him Michelle is thinking of him and praying everyday for his total healing.

May God bless you all and GOD BLESS AMERICA… Michelle
