    slick:

By "the few"- I meant individuals that berate others for their life choices. Mr delrosaio was paying all expenses, and donating his time so Pop A Smoke could benefit. As he said, he received antagonizing responses to his offer. I agree with Mike Mullins about the " political correctness" statement. Feel there should be no personal attacks on life choices- and as I said, if you don't like an item on the auction table, don't bid on it.

The amount of effort it takes to put together an African safari is considerable. The outfitter or professional hunter brings together a staff of trackers, skinners, camp help, launderer, cook, driver, and whatever other personnel the p/h deems necessary to make the hunt a successful, enjoyable, and safe adventure for the hunter. Along with that comes the gathering of food and supplies. Kind of like running a small patrol base except the hunter is housed in first class accomodations (no tent or poncho, unless you specifically ask for it). Even though the outfitters are very competent in providing such services it still takes a considerable amount of planning and coordination, not to mention the expense that the outfitters were willing to absorb.

My concern is that some at our convention would find the hunting safari raffle or auction to be inappropriate for our membership. I just thought it was a good fund raising item for the benefit of the organization. I didn't think that it would ruffle some feathers.

Anyway, even though I won't be offering a free safari raffle/auction at the reunion, please feel free to talk to me about African hunting safaris and what specials are available for members of our organization. I'll be floating around the HMM-365 hospitality room or the bar at happy hour.

BTW, the decision to rescind the offer was mine and not Slick's or anyone on Popasmoke's Board. Putting together the reunion is a daunting task, as it is, and they have so much more work ahead of them. They get my thanks and vote of confidence for all they have done for us.

    Drippy,
Not sure where your comment is coming from.
Del originally asked "what it takes to get a vendor table for the 2010 reunion" and offered "if there is enough interest, I could possibly contribute a free African hunting safari to be bid on in the silent auction or as a raffle'.

The question about "interest in a safari" developed into a discussion of whether hunting for sport was appropriate.

    Bottom line:
Info on how to get a vendor table was provided and option remains.
Del has decided to withdraw his offer for reasons he stated.

So again, I'm not sure where the "now a FEW think they own it" is coming from

    African safari offer cancelled

I posted a feeler on this board last month to see if there was any interest in a raffle or auction for a free African hunting safari. There seems to be little or no enthusiasm or support for my offer. What came out instead, to my surprise, was antagonism toward sport hunting.

I've cancelled my trip to the Safari Club International Convention in Reno this coming week wherein I was to talk to two safari outfitters who had expressed genuine interest in donating safaris to our organization for the purpose of raising funds. All preparatory effort and expense would have come out of my own pocket and would not have cost the membership a penny.

I'm withdrawing my offer for a free safari.
