Hi 162 squadronmates....

As many of you know, a dedicated group of inactve Marines from the Vietnam area, are busy restoring a H-34 to full flying status.

They are making great progress and you can check out their work with up- to-date photos and the status of the aircraft on line at www.34restoration.org.

In previous memos, I've mentioned that this chopper, (Bur # 150570) was with our squadron for a part of our 64-65 in-country tour. I logged three flights in the chopper, two from the Princeton for a total of 5.0 hours. I do remember from previous notes that Goose flew the chopper for 1.3 off the
Princeton in Oct/Nov., and 1.4 in VN in March.

I don't remember the side number of the aircraft so I don't know who crewed her or who else flew her while we were there. The
side number was YN 19.

I had remembered hearing a story that someone thought 150570 had been "borrowed" from our squadron by a flight crew from Air American and flown off the deck of the Princeton, never to return again, but I have no proof of that. And that doesn't seem to make sense with my log book entries but I do know that after April, I never flew that chopper again.

Now here's an interesting twist. A TV producer is making a television special about the restoration of YN 19...that's what the restoration group has renamed her. The producer, Kathy LaForgia, would like to hear from anyone with any stories that you might remember about 150570 when the chopper was with us. (and as many of our memories are almost shot, maybe you can make up something interesting)...just kidding, of course.

If you do remember, or think you remember....or someone tells you something to remember or something you'd like to remember...please email your stories to Kathy at Briarwoodvideo@hotmail.com, and also send a cc to
ajweiss@34restoration.org.

With so many of our squdronmates passing away, we can help preserve the lasting memory of our squadron's efforts in VN when 150570 flies again...and she will fly again. This will be an important legacy for us to leave to others. Will anyone ever forget what a 34 sounded like when one flew over?
Truly an aviation classic. Jets have no signature sound, but all of our choppers did, that's for sure. We need others to hear that too.

Thanks for your help and thanks to Jim Carroll for making this available to you all.

I hope you are all well and look forward to seeing each of you sometime in the future.

Semper fi
Al Weiss
