glad you are having fun with your restored 1-e. i know the aircraft as being a fire suppression aircraft her in tallahassee for the division of forestry. thought you might like to see the static 1-b aircraft dressed out as a navy seawolf we drag to airshows.

Hey Birdman,
This was in the 267 until 1976, it must have been painted red also..Cool!.
Im looking at different formats for the ACE OF SPADES for her. The Nose art I would like to be airbrushed on, The tail will be done in stinsels. Im putting her in the gunship format, I know she was not a gunship in the 267..Just personal choice..Should have the gun mounts this month sometime. I also decided to put the skull and crossbones inside the ACE OF SPADES for a gunship format.
Im haveing trouble finding a good picture for the artist to copy. Found some playing cards that the GI's used to put on the bodies of the dead VC. Scared the crap out of them when they found the bodies.
Does anyone have any pictures of gunships with above format?
Just finished painting the floor , also painted the seats back to Olive Drab.

Great pictures of your B model! Love to see the trailer you haul it on? or do you guys fly it in?..Do you let people climb on it?...Guess when myne is finished I should not..Haveing a alumium ladder/support for the blades added to the trailer to support both blades. Will have a hinged cover and soft fome to hold the blades.
Thanks guys!.
Kevin in Maryalnd.

PS, Which ACE OF SPADES do you like?
I kinda like the Zippo lighter one..

Uh-1e

Hey Kevin, she's looking good! The ace of spades on her when I was there was simply an ace of spades with the letters UV kind of transposed with each other. I don't recall nose art like we had on our birds on the carrier.
Birdman

Come to think of it, the ace of spades WAS on the nose as well. I found a plastic helicopter model in a model shop several years ago that was a model of a Huey with the ace of spades and the UV call sign. I bought it and it sits on a shelf today. Pretty cool finding a model of a helicopter that I actually flew in!!!

There's a picture of a HML-267 Huey here

It shows the Ace of Spades on the nose with the a/c number and on the tail with the UV tail code.

HMLA-267 currently has an Ace of Spades with a skull on the nose of their a/c like the one in this patch.

Hey Guys,
Just got my gun mounts installed, going to remove them and paint them green. Leaving the rocket pods white as was told most were painted. It will look better on myne with the white 'MARINE" on the tail etc..Plus they were white on the inhouse birds..Also painted my 5 ton, and installed a receiver to pull the Huey to the shows..Will have some more pics when I hook it up and take it for a test pull around the town..Should be interesting...

This is a picture I took in '69 of a UH-1E gunship on HML-267's flightline at Camp Pendleton. Yours is the cleanest Huey I've ever seen.

As you can see from the '69 photo; the UH-1E gunships had the cargo doors removed.

Those pictures bring back old memories, Tom. I reported in to HML-267 in Sept. '68 and left for Marble Mountain on 2 June '69. I remember barn owls in the rafters of the Metal Shop in the second and third pictures.

I flew 151858 24 flights, 31.7 hours from 28 Feb '67 to 16 Sep '68 as an instructor pilot. That was in both VMO-5 and HML-267. I took her on two Gun-1 flights. I do not remember what all was covered on those flights but it probably did not include shooting so she may not have had AFC-7 but probably had at least a "sight." Oct '68 I was back at Marble in the OV-10A.

In 66-67 VMO2 kept the doors on and used an L clip to keep the air flow from popping them off in flight. I never could follow the logic for that since we couldn't close them because of the external ammo feeds. And it was insult to injury on the night TAOR's in the "winter" when it got chilly at 3,000....

This was sent to me by then Capt Dave Ballentine

"Tom, It's in my logbook from HML267. I flew a Nav hop in Sept 67 and a test hop Mar 68 and April, etc... Can you let the guy know? I can't answer his NOTAM Board notes. Give him my email if you want. What a great idea to restore it. Dave

Hey Guys,
Just a update..
Did meet a great guy Major(ret) Clyde Childress USMC while at a Wounded warrior fund raiser he put on this month.
He did look in his log books and found out he flew my bird over 100+ hours with some 'gun runs'...
Neat talking to him and the media went nuts filming him and the bird..He earned 21 air medals and a DFC. He also got shot down twice..He said he just got lucky.
Kevin...

ps, check out the other pictures from the weekend.

Uh-1e / uh-1b

I see this a lot here and on other sites about VMO-1 reguarding the UH-1B. I was in VMO-1 when we had both Bs and Es. VMO-1 had UH-1Bs that were lent to us from the Army for training until the UH-1Es came off the line. The best way to quickly tell them apart was the pitot tube. The B models had the pitot tube under the co-pilots window and the E model had them on the roof. The first Es went to WESTPAC.
