Bu. No.

Ripper,
That Bureau number is from an aircraft much newer than a UH-34D, I believe. The beginning of the CH-46F's were received in late 1968 with Bu. Nos. of 1548xx. I think you need to recheck that number, sir.

Bureau Numbers 1911 to Present

Sorry Joe, but you are not correct. Please take a look here http://home.att.net/~jbaugher/navyserials.html Ripper already has information from me telling him some information and it is an H-34 that he has. He is looking for Crews that may have flown her and give some history about this bird.

How about it Uglies, some of you must have some records from your flight logs that you flew this bird. Give the museum a hand.

NEW H-34's

The BuNo 154895 may very well be a UH-34. When the CH-46's were grounded with their Station 410 problem Sikorsky reopened the UH-34 production line for a limited time. When I was back in CONUS (late '68) and instructing at NAS Meridian we had a UH-34 assigned as the Station SAR bird. Wayne Henderson and Joe Fernandez (USMC Vietnam 34 drivers) were 2 of the SAR pilots. The A/C had very new BuNo and both pilots told me that it was of recent vintage. Sorry I don't have the BuNo. I was still at Meridian on April 20, 1970 when it crashed and burned in the trees, engine failure. Wayne Henderson and the entire SAR crew were killed in the accident.

I remember hearing that before, but had forgotten, thanks Joe! I've been corrected before, Brook, and probably will be again. Thanks for the info, I didn't remember the "new" bu no's on UH-34's. I'm more interested now than before of the bird's history!

By the way, the link to the Bu Nos is most interesting, lots of info there you wouldn't expect!

Yl-75

Thanks for the help so far Guy's. QUESTION: Did Marine SQ's use the YL-75 on their A/C. In my research I've come across other H-34's with the YL-75 painted on the A/C...Jerry

Yl-75

Jerry,
YL (Yankee Lima) is the call sign for squadron HMM-362. 75 was the side # of that particular Aircraft. I'm sure there wee more than one YL75. In 1968, I believe, to ease the Navy in their confusion of keeping track of Marine aircraft, all squadrons renumbered their aircraft from 1 to the highest number, usually 24. Now they would be YL1 through approx. YL24.
Hope that helps.:)

BuNos

Glad to see that came in handy. Please remember to give Mr. Baugher a big Oooyaahh. I looked for that info for months, including contacting Navy, and only stumbled upon his site by God's grace or dumb luck just when I was ready to give up.

Hmm 362 Yl-75

Brook; You can view a photo of the A/C we have by going to Yahoo search and putting in HMM 362 YL-75..Click on third link down and YL-75 is the third photo down(PLANES OF FAME-Chino) You were right. The appendage on the port(left side) is for the HF/Single side band radio equipment which is still on the A/C .In my search of H-34 photos. I have not seen that antenna on any of them..Merry Christmas and Happy New Year..Jerry

154895

From my records, 154895 never served with HMM-362, so I think the "YL-75" code was painted on as a tribute.
Here is a picture of 154895 probably taken at Kaneohe in the late 1960's.
