Regarding squadron emblems and mascots...

Were both 361 AND 262 "Flying Tigers?" I suspect not but can someone straighten me out?

ANd 365... I can't make out the mascot/nickname for this squadron. Need help there, too.

In fact, since I am asking, I'd like to see which patch/emblem is the preferred by each squadron for the Viet Nam period of our history. Anybody know all that stuff?

Both squadrons were/are "Flying Tigers" as is VMA-542. HMM-365 is "Blue Knights".

Roger that. Thanks!

Strange that they duplicated. Must be a good story in there somewhere.

HMM-262 mascot name is Cedric. There were a few in-country patches.

VMA-542, HMM-262 & HMM-361 = "Flying Tigers"

Gentlemen,

Marine Attack Squadron (VM) 542 was initially commissioned as Marine Night Fighter Squadron 542 (VMF(N)-542) on March 6, 1944, at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina.
- Presently with MAG-14 at Cherry Point, NC

Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron (HMM) 262 was activated in September 1951 at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina
- Presently with MAG-36 at Futenma, Okinawa, Japan

HMM-361 was initially commissioned as Marine Transport Squadron (HMM) 361 on February 25, 1952 at what was then Marine Corps Air Station Santa Ana, California.
- Presently as HMH-361 with MAG-16 at Miramar, CA

Footnote: In the Spring of 1967, HMM-262 moved from Ky Ha to Marble Mountain ,into quarters and the Flight Line previously occupied by HMM-361, a tiger head logo, different from 262's and the words "HMM-361 Flying Tigers" had been stenciled on the various shops along the flight line. They had been there with their 34's prior to 262's arrival with 46's. However, if Commissioning Dates were to be considered, then 262 would have senority in the rotoary wing element. But at the end of the day, we are all Marines first and foremost.

But it still makes good fodder for "Bragging Rights"....

HMM-365 nicknames, insignia, and mascot

HMM-365 Squadron nicknames:

1. The Flying Circus
2. Koler's Klowns
3. The Stingers

HMM-365 Squadron Insignia:

HMM-365 Squadron mascot: Double Nuts

It should be noted that the crow, Double Nuts, has been locked up in the HMM-365 Historical Footlocker. He does not eat solid food but subsist strictly on liquid sustenance. We have tried to get him to attend AA but he is in denial.
