I need some answers on something and would like to post it on popasmoke but not sure how so I am asking you to do it for me if it's ok.

While I was doing research on Lantie I was able to get ahold of some of his Military records. Anyway yesterday I got a package in the mail from Department of Navy...Retired Records Division. When I opened it there was this letter that said:

"A review of the record indicates entitlement to the following awards".

Air Medal (12) which I think means he flew on 12 missions.
Bronze Star Medal w/Combat "V"

How do I find out what he did to earn the Bronze Star? Nowhere in the records that I have show what he did to earn that? Is that an award that's given out as a rule? Also I would like someone to explain to me how it is 39 years later they are just now sending these two awards???? I would have thought they would have been sent to the family along with the body.

Is there someone in the Ugly Angels that would know? I asked some of the guys he flew with and nobody seems to know. Can you ask in the forum for me how do I go about finding out or if this is a medal that everybody who was killed got?

Wally,

An Air Medal was awarded for every 20 combat missions as an air crew member. I would interpret Air Medal (12) as representing a minimum of 240 combat missions. The Bronze Star with Combat V is awarded for heroism on the ground. It is the equivalent of the Single Mission Air Medal, which is for service in the air. He earned both according to his records - the Bronze Star is awarded only for individual heroism.

I would assume that the medals were shipped due to a request for records, possibly by Katie. Other possibility is that no one had ever asked for them before.

Al
