Here is an email from HqMC looking to connect with personnel who served in Vietnam during Operation SHUFLY:

Headquarters Marine Corps, Division of Public Affairs, is currently organizing a series of commemorative events in honor of the 50th anniversary of Operation SHUFLY, the first U.S. Marine Corps engagement in combat operations leading to the Vietnam War.

In an effort to honor all Marines who served in support of Operation SHUFLY, our office is in the process of locating Marines from the squadrons that participated in this Operation. We are contacting Marine websites in hopes you can help by including the short paragraph below on your site or in an upcoming publication, newsletter or blog. We desire to get in contact with as many Marines as possible in hopes they can participate in Operation SHUFLY commemorative events this year.

"Headquarters Marine Corps, Division of Public Affairs, is currently organizing a series of commemorative events in honor of the 50th anniversary of Operation SHUFLY, the first U.S. Marine Corps engagement in combat operations leading to the Vietnam War. If you served in one of the squadrons listed below as part of this Operation, DivPA is interested in speaking with you to discuss your possible participation in a commemorative event in 2012. Interested Marines should contact Jeanette Casselano at 703-614-1034 or by email at jeanette.casselano.ctr@usmc.mil."

If you know of Marines who are interested in learning more about possible commemoration events, it would be helpful if you could have them provide the information below to Jeanette Casselano (Cc'ed).

Re: Looking for Operation SHUFLY personnel

Here's a list of the squadrons who participated in Operation SHUFLY between 9 April 1962 and 30 November 1964:
MABS-16 Subunit 2
HMM-362
HMM-163
HMM-162
HMM-261
HMM-361
HMM-364
HMM-365
Personnel actually assigned to those units during the period stated above while in-country are considered SHUFLY veterans, as are TAD personnel with specific orders to any of the above units, such as OE and R4D crews and mechanics, grunts assigned to the security units, foreign language interpreters, and combat photographers.

Re: Looking for Operation SHUFLY personnel

This is the HqMC list, not mine. VMO-2, indeed, had personnel and aircraft there during Operation SHUFLY. As I recall, the OEs (O-1Bs) that were there when HMM-365 (my squadron) was the SHUFLY squadron did come from VMO-2 but were assigned to HMM-365 and carried the tail designation YM, as did all the UH-34Ds. The R4D (C-117) belonged to MABS-16 and did not carry the YM tail designation, although our ninja paint crews did sneak over to the flight lines and painted any aircraft they could find with the YM. One of my Facebook friends was an OE driver that was with us during that time. I'll have to ask him if he was VMO-2 or HMM-365.
