There are 114 H-34's up for sale in Tucson, mostly Army CH-34C's, due to the lease on the land where they are stored, running out. The owner says that he has been offered $1,000 each for them as scrap value. It would be a shame if the USMC examples were to be shredded, most of which had Vietnam time. Sounds like the owner doesn't want them to go that way either. The BuNo's of the UH-34D's in the lot are 143977, 148095, 148115, 148766, 150250 and 150255. All but 148115 and 148766 have Vietnam time on them. If anyone wants to know the service history of any of these UH-34D's, feel free to send me a message. There should be plenty of spares lying around to make a nice restoration project.

The details can be seen at
http://originalforum.justhelicopters.com/DisplayMsgJH.asp?ForumID=23&Msgid=1471336&page=1&Return=DisplayMsgJH.asp&D83jsd=True

Or for photographs got to http://www.barnstormers.com/ and search by S-58.

The lot has to be cleared by Feb 28th.

Vietnam Service 34's

It would be a shame for these Marine 34's to be scraped. I hope any or all 34 people that has over the years thought about getting one, and restoring it for reunions, nows the chance. If they are mostly intact sounds like there wouldn't be much work to be done on them. Whoever buys them at a thousand apiece, will double their money at a later date on the ones that can fly again. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

Tucson H-34s

This is probably the batch Al Weiss and some of us checked out a few years ago. Most of the airframes had been punched with a forklift to move them. Blades had been thrown on pallets. Couldn't find an airframe to restore in the whole bunch.

Tucson H-34's

I was afraid of that Wayne. Hope some will show up somewhere that can be re-built. Still hoping you and others can get one before long. Stay warm. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

I have time in 150255 on Sept 10, 1966 and Sept 19, 1966 when I was with HMM-161. Sorry to hear about her condition.

I emailed the aircraft curator at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and told him of them. I don't know if they have one in storage but, if they don't, this would seem to be the time to pull the trigger on the purchase of one.

Cheers,

Craig

34's for 1000

After seeing the picture of the condition of then, which was not there before, I doubt the only use for them would be for static display. I agree with Wayne that not a single one could be put back to Flying condition. If any were, it woulkd be a miracle. Very sad for sure. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

Marine Air America

I would say that the Marines I worked with at Air America Udorn would have evry damn one of those flying in short period of time. They could take an H34 Data plate & build one !!! I arranged for the VNAF field crashes to be turned over to Air America & that was their level of performance. Dont guess we can gather all those folks around now for this project. Makes me feel good to remember them !!!

Paul, thats why I said that, at one time they could have been, but the ones that could have done it are scattered, or have joined Chesty now. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

The guy who is selling the 114, is also selling his nearly complete S-58, which started life off as an UH-34E, 145713, for $35,000.

Go to Barnstormers.com and search by keyword "Sikorsky" for the latest ad.

Re: Vietnam service UH-34D's for sale

Sid, I would believe he is having trouble finding usable parts, or it wouldn't be so low asking price. It would be nice to see them Fly again though. Someone could do it if he isn't going to. Semper Fi, and READY-APP.

Re: Vietnam service UH-34D's for sale

Little bit of good news recieved today. It seems that BuNo's 148115 and 150255, the latter had Vietnam time with HMM-162, 163, 263 and 365, have been saved from the scrapman by the Wings and Rotors Museum, based at French Valley airport, Murrieta, CA. Uncertain as to what the plans are for these UH-34D's, but as they have an airworthy Huey and a OH-58, lets keep our fingers crossed.

Photos of the salvaging of 150255 can be seen at

I've been told that they have discovered 62 patches on the helicopter, probably a reminder of her time in Vietnam. Served with HMM-161, 163, 263 and 365 in S. Vietnam.

The helicopter is now at French Valley Airport, Murrieta, CA
