Question for the Membership? And statement of the question! Many years ago - 1955 and later, many of us enjoyed the warmth & comfort of the Jacket/Flying (WEP). Subject jacket was the undergarment of the Poopy Suit (i.e. - poopy suit liner)

For the old timers - What does WEP stand for?

Respectfully - G. Larry Larkin, USMC (Retired), Phrog driver 🙂

Winter Flying Suit Jacket

I am not sure but I think that since the original specs for the garment were issued by BUWEP, (Bureau of Weapons, U S Navy), that when the spec number was assigned it was followed by WEP to identify the department that ordered it.

BTW, I still wear mine and get quite a few comments regarding it, even from some Gulf War Vets!

Flight Jacket

I wear mine on the rare instances it's cool ehough in south Florida to do so. Since I ride motorcycles, I can utilize it much more than I would otherwise. NO air gets through it, for sure. This one is actally a replacement for my original that was stolen in Okinawa during my return to Conus from RVN in December of 1968. When I was on the flight line in Pensacola during the 2002 Reunion there, my wife bought it for me. It was expensive, and then I needed to get the patches and have them sewn on. About a $500 investment, but it was worth every penny! I get positive comments on it fairly regularly.

re: BUWEP-U.S. Navy Jacket

Allyn, are we talking about the same thing...????

I have been looking or a replacement for years.... none are anywhere and the jacket in Military section of your link is not

BUWEP-U.S. Navy
JACKET, WINTER FLYING SUIT
SPEC. MIL-(style would go here like S L)-183428 (WEP)

I know I am talking about the Olive Nylon one that in reality is the top of a winter flight suit... we never got the pants that went with it nor the hood. It has no slash pockets they are 'Flap' Covered pockets.

WEP Jacket

You can find them out there online, search Google or Yahoo. I found the following sites:

www.vintagemilitary.com

www.flightsuits.com

www.flywings.com

www.soldiercity.com

And I know there are many more that have both newer ones and vintage. You can also try ebay or other auctions.

I called Quartermasters today 12/28/05 to ask about the jacket since I got one from them in 2004. They told me that they discontinued that item in June 2005. Sorry about that! The jacket I have has the following on the label: JACKET TYPE G-8
U.S. NAVY
SPEC.7823 (AER)
CONTRACT #5058-1G-BWEP
ISS NEW YORK, NY
There has to be someone out there still making them.

Try http://www.uswings.com/

By the way, any POPASMOKE member who wants to purchase a military issue G-1 from U.S. Wings, can get about a $50 discount by making the request through me. This is a deal David Hack extended to POPASMOKE a few months back.

Flight Jackets

If you live any where near a US Naval Air station, USCG Air Station or USMA Air Station you should be able to fine those jackets in the PX/ Uniform supply/Cash sales. Ther are around. I bought my last nylon jacket at USCG Air Station cape Cod and I bought my leather jacket at NAS So Weymouth. Our "issued" jackets were not allowed to be "folded--spindled--or mutilated be the attachmentod squadron patches etc and had to be turned in. So go buy your own.

not responding...

US Wings is NOT responding to my e-mail. I've sent five follow-up e-mails with no response. Sorry folks. If they respond, I'll let you know. The lack of response and customer service is suspect.

I got a G-1 on eaby last year for $115. (just be careful of the size, we're not built like we were 40 years ago, I'm only 10lbs heaver than when I wore a 40 but now my 42 is loose in the sholdures and tight in the waist. Go figure):)
