Tom Lenz

Scott,
Tom & I were in the same hootch in Quang Tri & he flew as my gunner several times.
Before I get too far down memory lane I'll try to answer your specific questions. Hopefully you've been able to get accurate info on awards. I'm sure Tom earned his aircrew wings, and he must have rated some Air Medals as well. He loved to fly & as I recall had extended his tour so he could get more hours in the air.
I don't remember Tom carrying a sawed off shotgun, but that's not to say he didn't. Another crew chief, J.D. Cross, carried one & as I recall he felt like it would be a good weapon to have if he ever had a really bad day & found himself hiking around the jungle.
Tom was a class act all the way. He worked hard & enjoyed what he did as much as anyone I ever knew. I remember he used to get packages with a 6-pack of Lone Star & some jalapeno peppers. He'd eat the peppers like candy, just pop them in his mouth one after another. One night he convinced me that the ones he'd received that day weren't hot at all & got me to try one. Up to that night I'd never eaten anything the least bit spicy in my life & Tom got a big laugh when I bit into that pepper & couldn't swallow it fast enough. Even though it cost Tom 2 of his Lone Stars I think he thought the joke was more than worth it.
Hope this helps Scott. Tell your father in law Semper Fi & thanks for remembering!

I'm sure that we flew together and from what I recall, I would echo Lou Maupin's comments; would just add that Tommy did qualify for Air Medal & Combat Air Crew Wings. I was medevac'd home in Aug68, so I am sorry that I can't help with any details re his death.

I was new then

I join 161 just weeks before tommy pased, I dint know him well, just in passing. But I can tell you that everyone was upset and deeply saddened by his loss. He had many great freinds. I am sure that he inspired many of us.
I hope this will help some.
