This new book published in february of 2013 may be a little different than other stories posted on this site. It is a more all encompassing story of a young man growing up in the 50's and 60's with the Marine Corps and Viet Nam the story's culmination. A synopsis follows:

Growing up is never easy. This true story, “So Close to Dying”, is a journey of remembrance, a narrative and photographic essay of coming of age in the 1950’s and 1960’s in the United States. It is the journey of a little boy to a man, moving from one misadventure to the next and filled with laughter, joy, heartache, and vulnerability on an unintentional path to maturity. As he grows up, learning to cope with life’s realities: within school, within his own family, and within the sphere of his own needs and desires, he finds his struggle all-encompassing and not without peril; he also finds that life is grand. His journey must play out against the late sixties, where the winds of social change blow through the fabric of America. The fight for civil rights rages, the Viet Nam war is in full swing, and many young men in America will receive a draft notice. With these realities in play, our protagonist must make a moral choice, and his all-or-nothing approach to life takes him to OCS, Quantico, Virginia and the Marine Corps, and finally as a helicopter pilot to Viet Nam, where his life will change forever. I trust the progression of this story of growing up in the fifties and sixties, from a little boy with often misdirected energy, but a kind heart, to a young man with a modicum of direction and self-esteem, but with that same heart, will resonate with some of you, make you laugh, make you cry, and affirm how precious is this gift of life.

"So Close to Dying" is available on Amazon.com as both an epub and paperback version. The story should be especially interesting to those marines having served in Qunag Tri, Hue Phu Bai, and Danang, but I am hopeful that it will be of general interest to those who feel becoming a marine was a seminal moment in their lives, and the friendships that ensued never fade away.

Any comments you can send to emowry@roadrunner.com or provide in this forum.

Ed I just wrote a big responds to your thread and darn if it didn't kick me off and I loss it.
So in short I said I have 2 books and have read it,and another Friend read it too. Yes its in a different but personal way. Everyone has a story and if 10 marines was on a mission there would be some different yet parts the same. I have been encourage to write My Story and just maybe your putting yourself out there has given me spark to do it. Maybe many more will do theirs sooner than later.
God Bless / Hope More will give the book a read. JJ :):)

Thanks so much for your comments, and for reading my book, and I do hope it encourages you to write your own story.
Story telling enriches all our lives , and I think it provides a link to our common humanity.
God Bless to you as well, and semper fi.

Ed Mowry
